Some verbs have predictable spelling changes in certain forms, usually to preserve the pronunciation of the stem. A spelling change alone does not make a verb irregular: most verbs on this page are regular verbs, shown in green. The verbs in red are irregular for another reason as well.

Celso Cunha, Gramática Básica da Língua Portuguesa (Lexikon), chapter «Conjugação dos verbos irregulares», under «Irregularidade verbal e discordância gráfica» (aulete.com.br), lists ficar → fiquei, chegar → cheguei, vencer → venço, restringir → restrinjo among the changes that «visam apenas a indicar-lhes a uniformidade de pronúncia dentro das convenções do nosso sistema de escrita» and concludes: «São, como vemos, simples acomodações gráficas, que não implicam irregularidade do verbo.» Evanildo Bechara says the same in Moderna Gramática Portuguesa, 37.ª edição, «Verbos regulares, irregulares e anômalos» (PDF, p. 268): «Não entram no rol dos verbos irregulares aqueles que, para conservar a pronúncia, têm de sofrer variação de grafia: carregar – carregue – carreguei – carregues; ficar – fico – fiquei – fique. Não há portanto os irregulares gráficos.»
