This verb is very common in Brazilian Portuguese and informal speech. In Portugal, pôr is preferred in most contexts.
Present:
Eu boto as chaves na mesa.
I put the keys on the table.
Preterite:
A Ana botou o livro na bolsa.
Ana put the book in the bag.
Imperfect:
O Miguel botava tudo na gaveta.
Miguel used to put everything in the drawer.
